BurgerTime Deluxe just got a DX color hack for Game Boy

Deluxe DX, yes please

If you’ve been paying attention to the Game Boy game modding scene, then you are probably familiar with Marc Max (also known as Marc Robledo), the same modder behind the recent Mole Mania DX hack. He certainly has a plethora of notable hacks under his belt, and the latest is a colorization hack for BurgerTime Deluxe, available now on GitHub and Romhacking.net.

BurgerTime Deluxe is a joy to revisit in color

Two months ago, Marc Max released Mole Mania DX, a colorized ROM hack for the original Game Boy Game. Clearly, Marc has been keeping busy, as he just released a colorized version of BurgerTime Deluxe (via GBATemp). Since the original monochrome game already uses the “Deluxe” moniker, it would appear Marc avoided calling this colorization hack “DX,” as most colorized Game Boy Games do, since it would be redundant.

Despite the uneasy naming convention, BurgerTime Deluxe has received the DX treatment, and now that it is in color, it’s looking better than ever. Of course, you don’t have to take my word for it, which is why I recorded a gameplay video (above) so everyone can see the hack in action.

More or less, it’s the same enjoyable BurgerTime Deluxe action many of us grew up with, where you’ll assemble burgers by walking across their ingredients, all the while dodging enemies. It’s a classic arcade game, and the Game Boy port is easily one of the best, and thanks to Marc’s hack, everyone can enjoy it on any Game Boy Color hardware/software in its full-colorized glory.

How to colorize your copy of BurgerTime Deluxe

As with most Game Boy hacks, applying the patch is pretty simple, especially since one of the sites that offers the hack, Romhacking.net, also provides an online patching tool that makes things incredibly easy.

First, you need to secure the original Game Boy ROM so that you can patch it. While there are many sites that offer ROMs, you can also rip it from the cart if you happen to own the game, as well as a GB Operator or GBxCart RW. Once you have a copy of the ROM, you next need to download the patch.

Upload the ROM and the patch file, and click the Apply button

Marc Max offers the patch on his GitHub, and it’s also available on Romhacking.net. Simply download the ZIP file from either site, and then unzip it. Once you have both the ROM and that hack, jump on over to Romhacking.net’s online patching tool, upload the ROM and the patch file. Bingo bango, the page should spit out a download of the hacked ROM, ready for any Game Boy Color emulator or flash cart.
