Relive Atari’s heyday with three new Game Boy Color carts

Snag the Atari ‘90s Rewind Collection from Modretro

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Modretro is on a roll, peppering fans with new features in its software along with new games from notable developers like Ubisoft. The company is on a hot streak, and that streak continues with the release of the Atari ‘90s Rewind Collection, which offers three remastered titles on their own individual physical carts, with some slick charms included. The price is high at $100 for the set, but if you’re familiar with Atari’s costly wares, then you won’t be that shocked.

Modretro’s Atari ‘90s Rewind Collection packs three classic Atari titles, now remastered for the Chromatic as well as the Game Boy Color (as in these carts will work on original hardware). All three titles made their original appearance for the Game Boy platform back in the ’90s, and thanks to Atari’s remastering, they are now that much more playable with improved graphics, mechanics, and new music.

1992’s Asteroids was originally a monochrome game for the Game Boy, and Modretro’s remaster is in full color, so that’s a pretty big change. 1998’s Centipede was initially released in color, but Modretro’s version now offers a colorful background to round things out. Last is 1999’s Super Breakout, which was originally a Game Boy Color game, but now that it’s remastered, new modes offer endless replayability.

So if you were worried that these were straight ports, worry not, Atari and Modretro have seen fit to improve all three games to account for their price. Of course, this collection pack feels a bit like it is priced for collectors at $100. Still, you also get some charms with the games, and I have a feeling these charms in particular will be highly sought-after collectables on their own, much like the Gamestop charm that’s getting harder and harder to find.

Don’t miss out on the Atari ‘90s Rewind Collection

Thankfully, unlike many shops that sell collectables, Modretro has been keen to keep its games and consoles in stock since the second wave of its consoles hit the net. Ideally, this means we won’t see the Atari ‘90s Rewind Collection sell out anytime soon. Still, if you’re heavy into collecting physical Game Boy carts like me, then you may have a hard time passing up this collection, especially when those sweet, sweet charms are calling.
