Serious Sam 2 celebrates 20 years with a surprise update, modernizing the FPS experience

Double the gun, double the fun!

The older you get, the easier it is to lose track of time, and now that Serious Sam 2 is 20 years old, having launched in October of 2005, it’s time to hide the gray hairs with a fresh coat of paint, which is precisely what Croteam has done. In a surprise update (on Steam) to celebrate the game’s 20th anniversary, a handful of free Steam goodies have dropped, alongside a slew of quality-of-life improvements, as well as a bundled-in community-renovation mod that is now officially part of the game. Now that’s how you drop a game update!

It’s hard to believe, but Serious Sam 2 is 20 years old this month

Serious Sam 2 always felt over-the-top, and while this is what the series is known for, the cartoony style of 2 didn’t suit everyone. Still, the first-person shooter gameplay and its challenging difficulty are hard to ignore. Serious Sam 2 may not look like a serious FPS game, but it sure plays like one, and it has proven to stand the test of time. So much so that the developer is still supporting the game 20 years later with a fresh anniversary update, and things are looking better than ever. Heck, you don’t have to take my word for it; check out the trailer above.

There is an absolute laundry list of changes, which you can view here, but here are the highlights. Steam users get a handful of community items, like trading cards, avatar frames, and profile backgrounds. Also, the community-made Renovation Mod has officially hit Version 1.0 and is now part of the game, bringing with it a tweaked UI that is closer to the OG Xbox’s, while also sporting improved animations, visuals, and weapons.

There’s even a new options menu for things like LOD Bias, Ragdoll Deaths, Debris, Max Debris, Uzi Screens, and Uzi Reloading. You can also expect improved draw distance, improved network options for multiplayer, and improved controls, including better support for controllers out of the box. Bugs have been squashed as well, and in general, the game looks more modern and polished.

You can’t go wrong for $10

If you already own Serious Sam 2 on Steam, all you have to do is update the game to see the new changes for the Anniversary Update, and if you’re interested in exploring one of Steam’s best shooters but have yet to play, you can snag a copy for $10, which is a fine price for a title that is still receiving updates 20 years after its release. A bargain and then some, don’t miss out!
